What is Blushing-Why do we Blush

The Physical Reason for Excessive Blushing:

Blushing is a physical reaction which is normally triggered by a social phobia such as shyness & embarrassment, the actual facial blushing is an involuntary response, I.e., we cant control blushing.

From a medical point of view severe blushing happens as the direct result of an over-active nervous system, this is called The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) andĀ  is one of the three parts of the autonomic nervous system, along with the enteritis and parasympathetic systems

The purpose of the sympathetic nervous system is to regulate the body’s resources under stress, put simply the SNS induces the flight-or-fight response. It does this increasing the size of blood vessels to allow more blood to pump through.

For those of us with any kind of social phobia the slightest thing will send a signal to theĀ  sympathetic nervous system instructing it to open the blood vessels wide, which unfortunately sends a rush of blood to the face amongst other places causing severe blushing.

Of course this is not always the case, there are some people who blush uncontrollably who do not suffer with any kind of social anxiety.
